Philip Custer from Broadneck High School in Anne Arundel County won the grand prize at the Rethink Recycling sculpture contest, a part of America Recycles Day, for creating a seahorse and squid from recycled rope and Styrofoam. The Maryland Department of the Environment organized this contest for the eighth time, wherein the students are encouraged to recycle trash and to create usable objects artworks out of it.
More than 50 entries from 19 high schools were received. The students displayed great artistry in fashioning artworks such as a trash truck, baskets, a tree, a peacock and much more from VCR tapes, bottle caps, lawnmower wheels, cans, paper and cigarette butts.
However, the first past the post, Philip utilized (recycled rather) rope, bottles, a mattress, pinecones, Styrofoam, wire and plastic bottles. He was honored with a television and a Blu-ray player.
