Contraception found to be the cheapest way to reduce carbon emissions
Desh | Sep 10 2009

In a truly intriguing report, the UK’s Optimum Population Trust suggests contraception as the cheapest method to reduce carbon emissions. According to the London School of Economics, who compiled this report (Fewer Emitters, Lower Emissions, Less Cost), it is five times cheaper than any other low-carbon technology available. Each $7 spent on basic family planning would reduce CO2 emissions by more than one ton. On the contrary, present low-carbon methods cost $32 to pull off the same result.

However, it’s not the only way to achieve the sought-after result. If families worldwide adopt family planning measures, it could result in 72% reduction in population by 2050. Resultantly, the GHG emissions will also go down. Moreover, the cheap alternative is sure to help empower women, avoid rapid shrinkage of soil, fresh water, forests, fisheries, wildlife and oil reserves and the looming food crisis.
